The APPA 5-level scale
The industry's shared language for clean. Every surface is scored against a written descriptor, not an opinion — so your audits hold up, level 1 (orderly spotlessness) through level 5 (unkempt neglect).
Level 1: Orderly Spotlessness
Floors and vertical surfaces shine. No dust, streaks, or trash anywhere in the space.
Level 2: Ordinary Tidiness
Clean with only light, scattered dust. A faint film may remain in low-traffic corners.
Level 3: Casual Inattention
Dust and spotting are noticeable on close inspection; trash receptacles are due for emptying.
Level 4: Moderate Dinginess
Dullness and dust are apparent without close inspection. Stains and odors may be present.
Level 5: Unkempt Neglect
Heavy soiling, odor, and visible neglect throughout — immediate attention required.
